How Phishing starts?

Phishing attack starts with a fraudulent mail which is designed to lure a victim and manipulate them to do some specific tasks like clicking the malicious links or an attachment.

Phishing attacks also happen with a normal text message or through phone calls.

Consequences of Phishing attacks:

Sometimes the attackers don’t satisfy with the individual’s information, they send the malware to the employees to get the organization details, this attack is a huge one which is called as advanced persistent threats(APT).

Deceptive Phishing:

In this attack the attacker tries to get your financial related details account information, id and password by sending a fraudulent email which looks as if it came from the bank.

For example, check your bank details with that given link with that click you’ll be redirected to a malicious bank login page with that attacker will get access to your bank account, passwords, email related to that account.

Spear Phishing:

In this attack a particular individual or organization is targeted by using his social media. In this attack a email or message is sent to in victim which looks legitimate. This attack is used for the financial gains. Unlike normal phishing attacks it is very hard to detect this kind of phishing.

Whaling:

Whaling is one of the phishing attacks which also known as Whaling Phishing. In this kind of attacks a highest authority individual is chosen like CEO as he will have all the sensitive information of the company.It works like normal phishing attacks but it’s very hard to detect a whaling attack. 

How to identify Phishing emails?

  • Unusual sender: If you receive a mail from an unknown sender then don’t open the mail.
  • Attachments: If you get any attachments from an unknown sender make sure you don’t open it, they’ll have malwares or a ransomware.
  •  Hyperlinks: If you get an email just hover it and you’ll know the website which that will redirect you. In case any misspellings in the website then its infected with some malware.

How to Prevent Phishing:

  • Educating people related to cyber attacks in the schools , colleges and the organization.
  • Two-factor authentication should be implemented with that extra security will be added.
  • With the use of long passwords with that it breaking passwords will b difficult.

Phishing attacks in India:

Form the past 2 years we hear lots of buzz words like Digital India and Cashless Economy. There’s increase in the digitalization and cyber attacks as well.

According to RSA, 50% of phishing attacks are recorded in the 3rd quarter of 2018.In the 3rd quarter 38,196 phishing attacks are recorded all over the world.

“The growing trend of going digital in India has made the country very attractive for phishers,” Daniel Cohen, director product, fraud and risk intelligence at RSA, told fortune India. In India 26% of all frauds are done through phishing attacks which is done through different kind of approach rogue apps.

Rogue apps are the clones of legitimate apps like banking apps, wallet apps or a malicious app acting as games. With rogue apps, 43% of total attacks are done in India.
